hISTORY OF PATRIOTIC NATIONALISM
The early emergence of a popular patriotic nationalism took place in the mid-18th century, and was actively promoted by the governments, writers and media of the time. The widespread appeal of patriotic nationalism was massively augmented by the political convulsions of the late 18th century, most notably the American and French revolutions. The factors that led to the growth of American nationalism during this time are tied to the French and Indian War.
During the 1760’s, American citizens of all classes shared a common distaste for the taxes and laws the British government unfairly imposed on them to pay for the war, and the idea of nationalism became popular as it promoted patriotism and independence. One person responsible for the promotion of nationalism was Thomas Jefferson who created the US Declaration of Independence, which ended Britain’s control over American colonies and made America independent. Another historical figure responsible for the rise of Nationalism was Napoleon, who promoted the idea that French people should feel proud of their country and should feel connected to it. He used this nationalism to help create a dedicated military force, inspiring countries all over Europe including Germany and Italy. In this way, both Napoleon’s and Thomas Jefferson’s contributions to their nations have helped nationalism become more prevalent by promoting the idea that the people should feel an affinity with their country. |
